Saybrook
Two days into the winter, and Saybrook is already closer
to that No. 1 spot than we've been since that golf invitational in the fall. By
jumping out to a 5-1 start, we've got some bad news for all other would-be Tyng
contenders. We just get better. Wait until after Christmas break and you'll
see.
Captains Paul Sohn '99 and Osvaldo Banuelos '01 look to lead a newly revamped
A-hoops squad to victory. They got off to a good start against Branford,
winning 41-25, and playing defending champion Pierson tight in a six point loss
as frosh Blake Williams and Jim Keppel showed powerful offensive and rebounding
skills and seniors Adrian Delmont and Scott Yaecker pounded the opposition on
the offensive glass. In B-hoops, senior captains Jeremy Rissi and Chris
Conway look forward to their debut attempt to get the shirts that eluded
them last year.
There's no doubt that the women of Saybrook are without competition. Natasha
Bloom '00 and Alice Liu '01 pulled double duty in leading basketball and
volleyball over two tough Branford teams. Captain Robyn Harris '99 looks to
avenge last year's run at the shirts in basketball as do the women
volleyballers, led by Liu, Bloom, and the powerful serving of Annie Eure '01
and Teri Hickey '00, as well as the fabulous setting of Nami Soejima '99 and
Karen Go '99.
Saybrugians, we've rebuilt our dynasty, going from worst to first in two
years. Our success can be summed up in five words: "Friends win, acquaintances
merely play." I can't stress how privileged I've been to play IMs with such a
great bunch of Saybrugians, especially the seniors who have all suffered with
me for four years through the bad times and the good times. We've still got the
Tyng Cup, and it definitely has no migration plans until the next millenium.
After all, we've got John Whipple '99. Woohoo!
(Compiled by an outside hitter who CAN, in fact, hit line when he
chooses.)
