Men's Basketball: Gaining strength, Elis are on the road to recovery
After a 0-3 start to the season, the men's basketball
team (1-4, 0-0 Ivy) is in search of a defense, in search of one more offensive
weapon, and in search of a captain. After a tough last-minute loss at Notre
Dame on Sun., Nov. 15, the Bulldogs were poised to use that loss as a
confidence-builder heading into their next game. Instead, the defeat sent them
reeling into a devastating home loss to Lehigh. Without injured captain Charlie
Petit, DC '99, the team's most experienced outside threat, the Elis fell to
Lehigh 79-66 on Thurs., Nov. 19. But the squad rebounded nine days later,
snapping their three-game losing streak with a blowout win over New Hampshire
Wildcats 86-62 on Sat., Nov. 28.
With more than a week to recover from the loss to Lehigh, the Bulldogs
improved their defense and welcomed Petit back to the lineup. The Elis stifled
the Wildcats, holding them to a paltry 36 percent shooting and forced them
behind the three-point arc on more than half of their shots. On offense,
forward David Tompkins, SY '99, continued to shine, pouring in 22 points while
collecting 12 rebounds. But what may have been the most important part of the
offense was the return of Petit. In his first game of the season, Petit dropped
in 17 points. His return opened up the offense and gave big men like center
Neil Yanke, MC '01, who had 12 points, more room to maneuver under the
basket.
At the Phoenix Classic on Thurs., Dec. 3, the Bulldogs lost a hard-fought
decision to Hartford. The Bulldogs were once again playing without the services
of Petit, whose injury will also keep him playing in the consolation game again
on Fordham on Fri., Dec. 4. The Bulldogs, faced with adversity, will hope to
return to winning ways.
