Women's Basketball: Youth infusion

A strong start and inspired play have propelled the Bulldogs to a 4-2 record after the first month of play. An 80-64 home win against nearby Quinnipiac College on Sat., Nov. 14, started the team off on the right foot. A long, tough road trip followed the initial home victory. The Elis began the trip by edging out the University of Hartford 52-49 thanks to two last-second free-throws by

Jamie Riposta, JE '02. A win against Hofstra followed, pushing the Elis' record to 3-0.

The Bulldogs were California-bound for Thanksgiving break, beating Cal State-Northridge by 10 points with the stellar play of Katy Grubbs, SM '99, who produced her second double-double of the young season. The Elis unbeaten streak came to an end, however, in the weekend's San Diego Tournament. Yale lost to the hosts in the first round by 17 points, despite strong play by Autumn Braddock, BK '99. The consolation round pitted Yale against Illinois, a nationally-ranked team with a historically strong women's basketball program. While Braddock and Miller turned in impressive performances, Yale lost 76-46.

But freshmen like Riposta will be keys to a successful season. The women's team has added six freshmen to an already strong team that returned three of last year's five starters. The Elis will face Army on Tues., Dec. 8, and Lafayette on Thurs., Dec. 10.
