Elis' future looks bright
Although club teams typically do not receive much
publicity, the men's rugby team is hoping to turn some heads this fall. Led by
captain Derek Webster, PC '99, and president Jed Herrmann, JE '00, the squad is
training hard in preparation for its first match against Worcester Polytechnic
on Sat., Sept. 12, at 1 p.m.
The team lost only three seniors and has a number of solid freshman recruits.
The Elis have been practicing three to four days a week to improve their
fitness. "Even though we're a small team, we're fast and we've been working
hard," Johnny Kwon, DC '01 said. "We expect to pose a challenge to quite a few
teams this fall."
The rugby squad will compete against tough competition, including Williams,
Fairfield, Trinity, Army, Brown, and Harvard. Army and Brown should pose the
biggest challenges, but the match against Trinity on Parents' Weekend and the
grudge match against Harvard also promise to be exciting.
Yale lost to Harvard last fall, but, after training in England last spring,
the Elis feel prepared to trounce the Crimson. While competing against
experienced players from schools such as Oxford and Cambridge, the Elis
improved in skill and strategy, Justin Beal, CC '01, said.
Coming into last spring's Ivy League tournament ranked seventh, the Bulldogs
upset sixth-ranked Pennsylvania and had close matches with second-ranked Brown
and fourth-ranked Cornell. Yale hope to carry this momentum into another
successful year.
