In Memoriam

Among the victims of the crash of Swiss-air Flight 111 on Wed., Sept. 2, was a distinguished member of the Yale community, Jane Depledge, JE '91. The Yale Herald mourns the loss of a distinguished alumna.

Described as a caring and intelligent woman with a respect for tradition, Depledge was employed in the estates and trusts division of LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene, and McCrae, a prestigious Manhattan law firm. Depledge and her family, natives of Wales, were on their way to an annual vacation in Europe before the plane went down.

At Yale, Depledge majored in English, graduating cum laude. She was also a member of the Herald family, heading the now-defunct Police Blotter section; her Herald contributions also included a cover story on female professors teaching at the University.

Depledge's friends remember her most for her loyal companionship. Paula Yoo, JE '91, Depledge's college roommate, said, "She would have been a character out of a Jane Austen novel." Yoo described Depledge as "very romantic. She liked the old way of writing letters [by hand]; she designed her own clothes." According to Yoo, Depledge also seemed to "have a quirky, British sense of humor, a real mischievous part."

Irene Basloe Saraf, MC '91, another friend and classmate, recalled her freshman year experience with Depledge. "We were worried about whether we were prepared for the academic challenges ahead. But we ended up figuring out how we fit in and gaining confidence as we made our way through Directed Studies and beyond," Saraf said.

After graduating from Yale, Depledge worked as a paralegal for two years and then attended Columbia Law School, where she ranked fourth in her class.

Though she expanded her circle of friends, Depledge maintained close ties with her friends from Yale. "Jane really understood the importance of balancing friendship and work. She was the ideal example of what Yale wants of people after they graduate," Jennifer Houser, JE '90, said.
