Women's golf: Set to defend the Ivy title
High expectations abound for the 1998-99 season as the
women's golf team attempts to duplicate its success of last year. During the
1997-98 season, the Elis placed in the top three in the Northeastern
Championships, finished second on the ECAC tour, and captured the second-ever
Ivy League championship (Yale also won the first Ivy League championship last
year).
Coached by Heather Daly-Donofrio, BK '91, a previous Connecticut Amateur
Champion and the women's record holder at the Yale Golf Course, the lady
golfers begin their season this weekend at the Dartmouth Invitational. They
will compete against eight teams from the northeast. Captain Kate Fisher, PC
'99, feels that Princeton, who finished only one point behind Yale in the Ivy
championships last year, will be the team's strongest foe. "They are returning
with a strong team this year, but so are we," Rachel Brakeman, JE '99, said.
Indeed, this team seems to have more depth than ever. Five of the athletes are
returning from last year's championship team. Brakeman points to the freshmen
as potential keys to this season. "The freshmen have played well in practice. I
believe they all have the ability to contribute to the team right away,"
Brakeman said.
The Elis' depth will be tested right away. Annie Scholz, DC '02, is unable to
play in this weekend's tournament because of an ankle injury.
