Women's Soccer: Here comes Harvard
The women's soccer team split two games against top
teams last week, but remains in position to meet its goals of winning its first
Ivy League title and qualifying for the NCAA tournament.
Yale's first big test comes on Sat., Sept. 26 against Harvard. The Crimson
(3-2 overall, 1-0 Ivy), known for their physical style, are looking to exact
revenge on the Bulldogs for a 3-2 overtime loss in New Haven last fall, the
only blemish on their Ivy record.
The Elis (4-1 overall, 1-1 Ivy) suffered a setback on Wed., Sept. 23, losing
1-0 to Hartford, which was ranked 18th in the nation at the time. Yale's Ivy
season began strongly, as the Bulldogs defeated Brown 3-1 on Sat., Sept. 19.
The game did not start well for the Elis; they trailed 1-0 at the half. "We
just needed to settle down and play our style," captain Annie Kwon, CC '99,
said. "It was a very physical game. Brown's players were taller and stronger
and the refs did not call anything. We really adjusted this time and came back
strong."
Right now the Elis are healthy, and if they stay that way and survive Harvard,
they will have a chance of being ranked in the nation's top 20 for the first
time ever. "That would be a great place to be as the Ivy race heats up," Kwon
said.
