Primed for the Ivy title
The men's golf team kicked off their practice season on
Wed., Sept. 2 with plans to both improve on the team's past success and
possibly divide the team in two. At the first official meeting, Coach David
Paterson announced that Yale's golf program may expand to include both a
varsity and junior varsity team. Precipitating this decision was the fact that
according to league regulations, Yale currently has too many players on its
varsity team.
Although practice has just begun, many of Yale's golfers have already begun
getting in shape in preparation for one of the team's biggest tournaments: the
Sept. 12-13 Yale Invitational. Golfer Peter Schumacher, CC '00, said, "We
should do well at the Yale Invitational, not only because it's a good course,
but also because of the home advantage."
Yale's first road tournament is at Dartmouth, a rather unpopular course
because of its small greens. Despite this, the team is anticipating an Eli
victory.
Although the season has just begun, the team is sure of its goal: defeating
rivals Pennsylvania, the defending Ivy champion. With the top four travel
players on the team returning--including captain Scott Brinker, JE '99, Ian
MacAllister, MC '00, Schumacher, and Eddie Brockner, MC '01--the team's future
looks bright.
