Branford

After spending the majority of first semester wallowing in the lower half of the Tyng standings, Branford's loyal IMers can surely hope that 1999 will be kinder to them than 1998. So far, the outlook seems rosy; women's hoops stands at an outstanding 2-1, men's volleyball is 3-1 after yet another epic defeat at the hands of PC, and just before Christmas, hockey finally won a game outright for the first time in years. As the winter kicks into full swing and a number of new sports get underway, look for captain Tom Palkot '99 to lead begoggled squashers Dan Brodhead '01, Matt Rothman '00, and Tina Odiaka '02 on a rampage through the squash circuit. Meanwhile Mike Smith '99, Meredith Bryarly '01, and a host of buoyant young frosh join our four secretaries in inner tubes, as the team looks to pick up where it left off in going undefeated in its final four games last winter. On the court, C-hoops mourns the loss of the graduated God Quad to loftier pursuits, and thus this year must find a way to adjust from 1998's veteran-heavy roster to 1999's youthful squad, as captain Justin Vaughn '02 looks to recruit a number of fellow frosh to surround future All-American Josh Smith '05 with a potent running attack. In the senior circuits, A- and B-hoops finally seem to have found their winning combinations, at the expense of bottom-dweller D-port. As the season gets rolling, best luck goes out to all Branfordians in their quest for Tyng glory. Even though we may already be mathematically eliminated, go on out and play for some pride in '99. Saying "Swing Space F'ing A" next year just won't be the same.
