Swimming: Crawling to the top
Over the winter break, both Yale swimming teams trained
in Orlando, Fla., for 10 days. "We trained really, really hard, and we need a
vacation now," Jeremy Fain, DC '99, joked.
On Sat., Jan. 9, the men continued their winning ways by defeating Army 144-97
at home. Currently 2-0, the Elis will take on Cornell and Navy at Annapolis on
Sat., Jan. 16. "One of our team goals this year is to beat Navy at Navy," team
captain Steve Gold, MC '99, said. "It's a stepping stone to our other [goals]."
Harvard, Princeton, and Navy are all also 2-0. "We're all up there," Fain said.
While all teams "look really strong, we should give Harvard and Princeton a run
for their money," he added. "The [next] meet will be a good test for us."
The lady Bulldogs face their next opponent, Cornell, on Sun., Jan. 17. "We're
very confident, but we're a very small team," Mulcahy said. The once-dominating
women's team is now carrying only about 20 athletes, down from about 30 in
recent years. "The team is closer this year because we're a smaller group,"
Lindsay Wolter, BK '00, said. "We've got quality, but not depth," Shannon
Mulcahy, SM '00, added. "Everyone needs to step up and swim phenomenally; we
realize it's going to be a long road ahead."
