Women's Squash: Under the guidance of a new coach, Yale hopes to shine
Newport, R.I., home to the prestigious Talbott Squash
Academy, has produced some of the world's finest squash players--but New Haven
may soon rival Newport as the centerpiece of the squash circuit. Squash legend
Mark Talbott, founder of the Academy, replaced long-time coach Dale Walker as
head coach of the Yale women's varsity squash team. Talbott, who was the
world's top-ranked squash player for 12 years, has won 170 tournaments,
including six World Professional Championships, and was named Olympic Athletic
of the Year three times. "Playing with Coach Talbott is amazing," Catherine
Fiederowicz, MC '01, said. "He really brings up our level of play, because he
is a talent we won't find in collegiate matches." Talbott has also introduced a
rigorous fitness program.
Despite their preseason training, the women were not able to defeat
Pennsylvania, who routed them 9-0 last month. The Elis rebounded in their
second match against Williams whom they shut out, 9-0. Loren Smith, SY '00,
said of the Williams match, "The fact that we won everything down the line
helped to set the tone for the rest of the season." The women hope to maintain
their momentum as they prepare for tough matches against Dartmouth and Brown
later in the season. At the Ivy scrimmages, Yale fell to Dartmouth, 5-4.
Fiederowicz predicted another close match in the second run against the Big
Green.
The squash season culminates in the Howe Cup, held this year at Harvard. The
Elis, who have only two seniors on the squad, including captain Carla Shen, TC
'99, hope to improve on last year's sixth-place finish.
