Track: Young teams maturing as indoor season progresses
They are young and inexperienced, but they have talent.
On Sat., Jan. 16, men's and women's track teams had solid performances in the
New England Challenge Cup. The women finished second with 178 points and the
men placed fourth with 36 points.
In the women's meet, Emily Estey, BR '01, won the 800 m and Yetsa
Tuakli-Wosornu, TD '01, won the long jump and the triple jump. The squad also
turned in victories in the 4x200 m relay and the 4x800 m relay. The team's
performance impressed head coach Mark Young, ES '68. "For the second week in
January, those are decent performances. More people are at a better spot than
we've been in quite a while," he said. "We cover all the events well for the
first time in quite a few years. It's a team that's exciting."
The team's stars are Jennifer Newsom, JE '01, who competes in the jumping
events, and Diane Potkay, PC '00, who competes in the throwing events. Due to
its youth, however, the team is unsure about who else will do the scoring.
"We're a young team--freshman and sophomore heavy," Young said. "It depends on
how quickly some of those people mature."
The men's team competed with eight schools, including Brown. Captain Dave
Hazelton, SM '02, and Don Carson, SY '02, qualified for the IC4As. Hazelton
took second in the high jump and Carson won the 500 m. Coach Stephen Bartold
was pleased with the team, adding that the middle and distance runners did not
accompany the team because of its youth. There are 22 freshmen on the team and
four seniors. "There's a lot of running coming up, so they'll be fresh later in
the season," Bartold said. "This is a step in the right direction."
