Streak breakers
Brown women's hockey
On Sat., Jan. 23, the New Hampshire women's ice hockey team ended one of the
most impressive netmind-ing streaks in college hockey. Brown goaltender Ali
Brewer '00 had not allowed a single goal for 376:03 minutes of play (an ECAC
record) when New Hampshire managed to slip the first of two goals past Brewer
in the third period. Currently, Brewer has a 10-2-3 record and a 1.05 goals
against average and has recorded a .951 save percentage while managing 8
shutouts. Despite the end of her streak, Brewer will be featured in Sports
Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd" section for her efforts.
Calling it quits
Penn women's basketball
Julie Soriero, the head coach of the Penn women's basketball team for the last
10 years, has announced that she will retire from her position at the end of
this season. After leading the Quakers to their first non-losing season in
eight years last year en route to recording career victory no. 200, she decided
to call it quits this year after Penn recorded eight losses in its first 10
games. In her decade at the school, Soriero's teams have compiled a record of
90 wins to 159 losses.
Championship pins
Cornell wrestling
Last year, at the New York State championship wrestling meet, the Cornell team
was surprised by an upstart Hofstra squad. Not this year. The nationally ranked
Big Red finished either first or second in nine of the 10 weight classes,
easily retaking the title from Hofstra, 188-147.5, in Bin-ghamton. Five Cornell
wrestlers won individual championships, including Seth Charles '00 in the
heavyweight division, who pinned his rival from Courtland. Fresh off the strong
performance, the Cornell team is set to try to knock off three-time defending
Ivy League champs Penn on Fri., Jan. 29.
