Wrestling: Defending a national title
With expectations high after last year's success, the
wrestling team hopes to defend its national title. On Sat., Jan. 30, the team
will compete in the Morrow Tournament at Lafayette in its second meet of the
season. The team won its first contest in December at a tournament at Yeshiva
and wants to maintain its momentum, despite a long break that included a
canceled home meet on Jan. 21, against Vermont. At Yeshiva, Yale defeated
Lafayette, Yeshiva, and Centenarry.
While the team has three seniors to lead the squad, it will have to rely on
younger wrestlers in order to succeed. Several freshmen are expected to step
up and gain victories in vacant weight classes.
"The team looks really strong this year," commented heavyweight Steve Petrie,
CC '01. "It looks like we're going to have a full line-up and a lot of guys
look like they have a chance at qualifying for Nationals."
The Yale Wrestling Club was established in 1991 after the varsity program was
cut. The team has been improving and hit its stride at the national tournament
last year, where Yale finished first. The club participates in the National
Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA), a body formed by programs similar to
Yale's which were removed from varsity competition.
The most important outing for the team and for the individual wrestlers, the
regional qualifiers at Valley Forge, occurs on Sat., Feb. 20 and Sun, Feb. 21.
Notable performances at this tournament will earn members a chance to compete
in the NCWA Championships in Dallas, Texas on Mar. 12-13.
