Women's Swimming: Tough winter training results in dominating victories
While most Yalies were resting at home during winter
break, the women's swimming and diving team traveled to Florida. The Elis were
not getting a tan--they were training in the pool, preparing for a tough
season. Their hard work has resulted in three victories on the road, including
wins against Lehigh and Seton Hall on Jan. Sat., 23 and Sun., Jan. 24.
In their first meet after break, the Bulldogs defeated Cornell on Sun. Jan.
17. The freestylers had a strong meet, taking first place in all their
freestyle events. Led by Captain Kate Ivers, BK '99, who placed first in the
200- and 500-meter freestyle, the team saw wins by Meredith Bryarly, BR '01,
and Emily Fain, DC '02. "Everyone is in better shape from the training trip,"
said Ivers. "We've been doing a lot of short, fast sprinting. We're ready to
swim fast."
The victories at Lehigh and Seton Hall confirmed the squad's abilities.
The141-100 win at Lehigh showcased the talent of Lindsay Wolter, BK '00, in the
200-meter backstroke, as well as that of Linda Tivorsak, TC '02, in the
400-meter individual medley. Shannon Dunlap, BR '01, Yale's lead diver, won her
events convincingly. "We're doing a lot better, especially since we just came
off our training trip," Dunlap said.
The Seton Hall meet allowed the Elis to stay in shape while honing their
skills against a less competitive squad. "It was a chance for us to get people
swimming different events," Ivers said. The squad will be entering the
difficult portion of the season, beginning with Sunday's Pennsylvania Dartmouth
meet and continuing during next week's important Harvard/Yale/Princeton meet.
"Everyone is extremely dedicated," said Ivers. "All the hard work is going to
pay off."
