Women's Basketball: Hoopsters hope to turn up the heat at season's end

The last time the women's basketball team (7-11, 2-4 Ivy) defeated Harvard, Newt Gingrich was championing a Contract With America, the O.J. Simpson trial hadn't yet started, and the current seniors were playing high school ball. But on Sat., Jan. 30, the Blue found themselves on the winning end of a 59-44 decision against Harvard for the first time since 1994.

"We expected them to be a powerhouse," center Lily Glick, ES '01, said. After five minutes, Yale found itself down 10-4. "They came out strong, but eventually our defense took over and set the pace of the game," Glick said. "They weren't expecting to come to our gym and get their wings clipped." Yale suffocated Harvard's offense for a 20-18 halftime advantage and began the second half with a 15-6 run. The Cantabs never got closer than five thereafter; the 44 points was their lowest total of the season. Center Katy Grubbs, SM '99, led the Bulldogs with 16, and Autumn Braddock, BK '99, added 15.

Yale failed to carry the momentum, however, losing to Dartmouth 56-47 on Sun., Jan. 31. The team shot a dismal 29 percent from the floor and was mathematically eliminated from the Ivy title race. Though disappointed, Glick said she believes there is much to play for this season. "Now that [the title] is out of reach, our goal is to play the best basketball we can," she said. "We want to play well for the seniors. They only have four short weeks left." The Bulldogs hope to foil other Ivy schools' title plans and prove to themselves that the real Yale team is the one that showed up against Harvard. They begin that quest with two games on a road trip to Cornell and weak Columbia on Fri., Feb. 5, and Sat., Feb. 6.
