Women's Ice Hockey: Bulldogs search for positives in midst of dismal season
The Yale women's hockey team (3-17-2, 1-17-2 ECAC)
needed to find some way to end a 14-game losing streak. Unfortunately, playing
two of the best teams in the ECAC wasn't the solution. The Bulldogs dropped a
pair of weekend road games, losing 8-1 to Brown on Sat., Feb. 6, and 6-1 to
Providence on Sun., Feb. 7. The defeats cost Yale a chance to pull out of 13th
place in the 14-team league.
The Elis were clearly overmatched against the Bears, who now trail the
nation's top-ranked team, Harvard, in the standings by two points. "Brown
outpowered us," Sue Barnes, DC '00, admitted. Yale's offense mustered only nine
shots. When the opposing netminder has set the ECAC record for consecutive
scoreless minutes and has been named goaltender of the week three times this
season, as Brown goalie Ali Brewer '00 has, nine shots will not get the job
done. By contrast, the Bears fired off 35 shots. Brown put the game away by
scoring three goals in three minutes in the first period for a 4-0 lead.
Nonetheless, the game was not a complete loss. "It was a learning experience,"
said Barnes. "[Brown] is the kind of team we want to be."
Against Providence, which is fourth in the ECAC, Yale's offense did a better
job of moving the puck around, but Providence still outshot Yale 33-19. Penalty
killing hurt the Elis: Providence converted on two of three power play
opportunities. Lisa Meyers, SY '01, summed up the pair of games: "We just had a
rough weekend."
The Bulldogs return home on Fri., Feb. 12, for a rare Friday game against St.
Lawrence, which defeated Yale 7-1 earlier this year. On Sat., Feb. 13, Yale
hosts Cornell, which beat Yale 6-0 in the first game of the season. The team is
looking forward to both rematches. "There's definitely a revenge factor,"
Barnes said. "We still have a lot to prove."
