Around the Ivies
A new racket
Harvard men's tennis
The No. 16 Cantabs christened the brand-new Murr Center
in Cambridge by winning their two biggest matches of the year, against No. 26
Kentucky and No. 12 Tennessee. The Kentucky match on Sat., Feb. 13, was the
first-ever dual meet at the new tennis facility. With the meet tied at three,
Crimson No. 3 John Duran '00 defeated junior Wildcat Johan Hesoun in a tight
match, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, to earn the victory. The next day, Harvard beat Tennessee
6-1 to stay perfect at 6-0 as they prepare for the USTA National Indoor
Championships.
Green giant slayer
Columbia men's basketball
With a 4-17 record, tied for last place in the Ivy League, the Lions were not
looking forward to their game on Sat., Feb. 13, against Dartmouth, which was
tied for first with Princeton in the Ivy League. Yet the Big Green departed New
York saddled with its second Ivy defeat of the year and sole possession of
third place in the league--behind the Tigers and Penn. Columbia forward Trinke
Vaughan '99 hit 27 points, with some key free throws down the stretch to
preserve the 69-65 win.
The ice of the Tigers
Cornell men's ice hockey
The middling Big Red (9-9-3, 6-5-3 ECAC) pulled off a surprising upset over
powerhouse Princeton (15-7-1, 10-5-1 ECAC) on Sat., Feb 13. The Tigers, who
were only three points out of the ECAC lead at the time, played like champions
for the first 15 minutes of the game, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. After that, it
was all Cornell. The Big Red stormed back, scoring eight unanswered goals, and
eventually triumphed over a shocked Princeton squad, 8-4. Senior forward Jeff
Burgoyne had four assists and was one of five Cornell skaters with multi-point
performances. With the victory, Cornell put itself in contention for a playoff
berth in the ECAC.
