Women's Tennis: Yale's female aces look to serve up an Ivy title this spring
Consistency from year to year is the key to building
championship teams, and is one of the many assets the women's tennis team
brings to the court this season. After posting a record of 11-5 overall (4-3
Ivy) last spring, the Elis served up their first spring aces Fri., Feb. 12,
against the University of Massachusetts, aided by the return of every player
from the '97-'98 season. In a blowout, in which Yale defeated UMass 9-0, the
Elis showed they may have just what it will take to steal the Ivy title this
season.
One of the major focuses of their Ivy championship run will be the doubles
matches. "We're focusing on strong doubles, especially the right combination of
people," Ashlee Ferlito, CC '01, said. Ferlito is currently playing alongside
captain Sara Naison-Phillips, BK '99, in the No. 2 doubles spot, and was part
of the fall team which was victorious in each of its four non-Ivy
competitions.
AlthoughYale has posted its first victory of the season, Massachusetts
provided no competition for Yale's rackets. "Harvard will definitely be our
best competition," Ferlito added. "They're always in the top 20 in the nation,
and we'd like to be right up there with them." Unfortunately, the Bulldogs will
have to wait for a while to play their Crimson rivals; the two don't meet until
the final competition of the season on Sun., Apr. 25. However, select members
of the team will get a taste of the Cantabs this weekend, as Yale kicks off its
Ivy spring season at the Princeton Invitational.
