Women's Squash: After tough tournament, squash sets sights on next year

"Disappointing" is how the women's squash team describes last weekend's Howe Cup. The Elis went 1-2 over the two-day tournament, placing seventh out of the eight teams competing."We weren't playing very well. We just didn't pull together and win the matches we should have," Catherine Fiederowicz, MC '01, said. In their first matchup the Elis fell 9-0 to Princeton, last year's Howe Cup winners and defending national champions. However, it was the ensuing loss to Brown that especially demoralized the team, as the women had pulled out a victory over the Bears earlier in the season.

This week, the Bulldogs face an undefeated Harvard squad fresh off its strong showing at the Howe, in which it narrowly edged out Princeton for the title. With no overwhelming pressure to win the match, the Bulldogs should have an opportunity to focus on individual play. "When you're not expected to win, you can focus on what you can do in your match and your own game to make it more competitive," Loren Smith, SY '00, said.

As this season comes to a close, the team has set high aims for next year. First-year coach Marc Talbott seems to have imparted great confidence to his players."I'm optimistic about our chances to win a national championship," Fiederowicz said. Though such a statement may seem like a leap, the Elis' new confidence, along with an unusually strong recruiting class that should bring both skill and depth to the lineup, could make such a lofty accomplishment possible.
