Women's Tennis: Taking it to the top
Heading into the spring portion of its season, the Yale
women's tennis team has demonstrated its ability to win over top teams by
indisputable margins, amassing a 9-1 record. Recent 9-0 victories over
Massachusetts and Seton Hall exhibit its potential to lead the Ivy League
during the coming weeks.
In an effort to maintain their winning ways, the Bulldogs sent four top
players to the Princeton Invitational last weekend. Yale doubles teammates
Jacklyn Fu, MC '00, and team captain Sara Naison-Phillips, BK '99, won the
doubles draw that included players from Columbia, Seton Hall, Princeton, and
Boston College. The Bulldogs also placed well in the singles draw, with Somer
Khanlarian, SY '99, advancing to the semifinals and Andrea Goldberg, TD '02,
reaching the finals of the consolation draw.
"We've never gotten more than two people into the singles draw before,"
Naison-Phillips said. "The fact that we got four [players] in speaks for the
depth of our team." A successful season seems sure to follow from the
tournament if the Elis can maintain their focus from the beginning of the
season--and they clearly have the talent to carry them through. "I feel like
this is the best the team has been since I have been at Yale," Naison-Phillips
said.
