Editor's Note

On Tues., Mar. 2, six teams played for IM championships. At the end of the night, there were three winners and three losers. Here's what went down:

Women's hoops: Branford 40, Saybrook 21. This game stayed tight in the first half. Both teams played tenacious defense, and Branford only led 12-10 at halftime. The second half was all Branford, as it went on an 11-0 run in a three-minute span, led by seniors Katharine Foster-Keddie and Rosie Wustrack. The swarming defense of captain Jasmine Ma '00, Caron Kim '99, Jada Yuan '99, Erin McGrath '01, and Anne Pawsat '02 proved too much for the 'Brook.

Men's A-hoops: Pierson 50, Jonathan Edwards 45. The rematch of these two titans proved at least as hard-fought as the first edition of this match. Pierson jumped out to an early lead behind some jumpers by captain Jeff Hockenbrock '00, but then JE rallied behind the inside-outside game of Erik Johnson '01, Jake Borden '00, and captain Chris Barnard '99. The decisive blow to JE came from the outside shooting of Pierson guards Ben Blake '00 and James Bennett '00. The inspired play of injured Eli Kelley '00 also helped carry the Piersonites to their second consecutive shirts, despite a three-pointer barrage by JE at the end.

Men's C-hoops: Saybrook 37, Ezra Stiles 26. This rematch of a 27-19 Saybrook win earlier this season did not begin well for the Saybrugians--Stiles jumped out to a
9-1 lead. But Saybrook rallied to a 13-12 lead behind 10 straight points from Nelson "That was the" Wong "man to leave open" '02. The 'Brook extended its lead to 10 behind five quick points from Dave Plattner '01 and outstanding play from Matt Chang '01. Phenomenal freshmen Mark Angehr, Paul Ardire, Jim Keppel, and Jack Kukoda also pitched in for the victory, and the Moose never came closer than eight points again.
