Around the Ivies
Normally, Harvard Athletic Director Billy Cleary is all
smiles when his women's ice hockey players perform well. And he has had a lot
to smile about this season as the team has skated out to a 26-1 record and the
top ranking in the nation. But on Sun., Feb. 28, you can bet the expression on
his face was a bit forced as A.J. Mleckzo '99 broke the Harvard all-time
single-season scoring mark--a record Cleary himself had held for 54 years.
Mleckzo made history by putting in three goals and three assists in a 10-0 rout
of Boston College. Mleckzo now has 27 goals and 67 assists for 94 points on the
year.
Only three Ivy athletes managed to qualify for the 1999 NCAA Indoor Track
& Field Championships, and two of them are from Brown. Both Brendan
Prindiville '99 and Trinity Gray '00 will be running in the RCA Dome in
Indianapolis from Fri., Mar. 5 to Sat., Mar. 6. Gray, co-captain of the team
and an all-Ivy cross country runner, qualified for the first time in the
5,000-meter run with a time of 14:12.81. Prindiville, who has qualified for
four out of five possible championships in his three years at Brown, is the
fourth fastest of 16 qualifiers nationally in the 800 meters, posting a time of
1:48.14.
On Tues., Mar. 2, Penn played its way into the NCAAs for the first time in
four years by defeating Princeton for the first time in seven games. By winning
at Princeton, the Quakers also snapped the Tigers' streak of 26 straight league
victories at home. Michael Jordan's '00 three-pointer right before halftime
gave Penn a lead it held for the rest of the game--the team went on a 24-8
second-half run to propel it to a 73-48 victory. The Quakers find out on Sun.,
Mar. 7 in what region they will be seeded and whom they will be playing in the
national tournament.
