Men's Squash: Another year, another notch up in the national rankings
The Yale men's squash team traveled north to Cambridge
on Sat., Feb. 27 with the chance to complete its best season in recent memory
at the National Intercollegiate Scholastic Racquets Association (NISRA) Team
Championship Tournament. This annual competition determines the best teams in
the nation.
Since winning back-to-back national championships in 1989 and 1990, the Elis
have struggled to return to the top of their sport. Last year was an
improvement as the Yale finished the season ranked fourth nationally. This
year, the Bulldogs raised their level of play one more notch to take home a No.
3 ranking from Cambridge.
The Elis notched an impressive win over Amherst in the quarterfinals, but in
the next round they ran into the Harvard juggernaut. The Crimson handed the
Elis an 8-1 loss, knocking them out of title contention. Yale then defeated
Priceton 5-4 to take third place. Next year, the Elis will shoot for Harvard
and ultimately Trinity, this year's national champs. Soon Yale may reclaim its
place at the top of the collegiate ranks.
The victory over Princeton was the team's second over the Tigers this year,
accomp-lishing this feat twice in one season was especially satisfying for the
Bulldogs. "I don't think we had beaten Princeton since 1993. To do it twice
this year was awesome," Deji Olukotun, CC '00, said. "Our success is a
testament to our hard work and good team chemistry."
