Branford

Even though you wouldn't know it from the weather, spring is finally upon us, and with it comes yet another season of Branford IMs. We're fresh off one of the most successful winter campaigns in Branford history, which saw us hammer out a third-best 72-49-3 record overall and move from a shaky eighth to a solid seventh in the Tyng standings. Many loyal Branfordians deserve thanks and mention for their efforts this winter, but now we turn our attention to the spring, in hopes of continuing our journey to the top.

This week's early action may be indicative of what's in store for BFA. On Monday afternoon, in a game played under what could hardly be called ideal conditions, freshmen Ian Anderson and Maceo Montoya hooked up for the game's only score with a minute left to lift soccer over Saybrook. The weather may have contributed to frosh Jessie Gearhart's sustaining a fractured ankle, but fellow Welchies Nestor Rodriguez, Tina Odiaka, Gabby Chassagne, and Emmett Stokes picked up the slack and helped secure the win.

Later that afternoon, BFA softball took on Saybrook. While the final score wasn't pretty, more sparkling performances from the freshman class lead one to be optimistic about the team's chances. Jon Garland kept his batting average perfect for the season while traveling 60 times farther than his first batted ball did, and Sandra Millor and Emily Weiss provided a great running catch and clutch hitting, respectively, in a vain attempt to keep the rally alive.

As the sun finally breaks through the clouds and the wind dies down, the dawn of a new era in BFA IMs may be at hand. With strong showings this spring, the sky's the limit for where we can go.
