Men's Ice Hockey: Hamilton hoping for Hobey

When Jeff Hamilton, SM '00, boards the plane to Anaheim, the site of this year's NCAA men's ice hockey Final Four, next week, his fellow Elis won't be accompanying him. That's because the Bulldogs are no longer in the running for the national championship; they were eliminated after dropping back-to-back home games to Colgate in the ECAC quarterfinals on Fri., Mar. 12, and Sat., Mar. 13. But Hamilton is headed to California on his own to attend a ceremony honoring him and the other nine nominees for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, college hockey's Heisman Trophy.

The junior forward is a darkhorse among the top collegiate hockey players in the country. He is one of two nominated players whose team did not make the 12-team NCAA field and one of only two ECAC nominees. But despite being the underdog, Hamilton boasts impressive credentials. He led the team with 20 goals and 28 assists, topped the conference in goals (15 in league games), assists (23), and points per game (1.81). He ranked in the top 10 nationally in points per game. He earned First Team All-ECAC honors for the second straight season and was named Ivy League Player of the Year.

But for all his individual accomplishments, Hamilton has still never played in an NCAA tournament game. He missed last year's first-round loss to Ohio State due to an injury. And although he's making the trip to the Final Four this year, he'll have to leave his pads and skates in New Haven. Maybe next year his teammates will join him.
