WEEKEND EXCURSION

Spending the holy days in New Haven

While many Jewish and Christian students will leave campus this weekend for Passover and Easter, Yale and city religious communities offer a variety of ways to observe the two holidays right here in New Haven.

Passover, the commemoration of the flight of the Jews from slavery in Egypt, began Wed., Mar. 31 at sundown. In addition to the traditional, personal, and alternative seders held at the Slifka Center on the first two nights of the holiday, the Center will also host two highly creative celebrations in the upcoming week. On Mon., Apr. 3, at 5 p.m., Slifka invites Yalies to attend "Celebrating Freedom Together: An African-American/Jewish Seder." On Tues., Apr. 6 at 6 p.m., Slifka will host a chocolate seder at Slifka. The motto of this all-chocolate, all-kosher festivity is, "Once we were slaves in Egypt. Now we are free...and life is sweet!"

The surrounding community also provides many opportunities for Christian students to observe Holy Week and Easter Sunday, the celebration of Jesus' resurrection from the dead. On Good Friday (Fri., Apr. 2), Yalies can attend a 4 p.m. service at Luther House (27 High St.) or a 7:30 p.m. service at Trinity Lutheran Church (at the corner of Orange and Wall Streets). On Sat., Apr. 3, the Lutheran Campus Ministry will host an 11 p.m. Easter vigil in Battell Chapel, followed by a champagne brunch at Luther House. The Episcopal Church at Yale will host an 11 p.m. vigil in Dwight Hall. For the early riser, the Yale Graduate Christian Fellowship invites you to an Easter Sunrise Service at 6 a.m. in East Rock Park (the group will meet at the corner of Orange and Cold Spring Streets). There will also be a Community-wide Sunrise Service at the top of East Rock at 7:30 a.m., conducted by University Chaplain Cynthia Terry. Other Sunday events include a 10 a.m. mass at Saint Thomas More (268 Park St.) followed by a brunch, an Easter and Communion service at the African-American Cultural House (211 Park St.) at 11 a.m., and a 2 p.m. solemn mass and benediction of the blessed sacraments at Sacred Heart Church (190 Columbus Ave.).
