Equestrian: Three riders make Pennsylvania Zones

After an unprecedented third-place finish at Regionals, three members of the Yale Equestrian Team--Sarah Catapano-Friedman, SY '01, Elizabeth Livingston, BR '01, and captain Nami Soejima, SY '99-- have advanced to Zones in Western Pennsylvania, which will take place on Sun., Apr. 11. The advancement to Zones is the perfect ending to one of the team's winningest seasons ever. "Never before in recent memory has more than one Yalie advanced to Zones," Catapano-Friedman said.

Soejima explained how a club team copes with constant adversity. "Team members spend an average of $1,000 to $1,500 every year," she said. "We are no longer riding at the Yale Polo and Equestrian Center due to lack of horses and trainers and an inadequate facility." Most importantly, the squad is the only equestrian team in the region without a coaching staff. One good sign for the team this year has been the support of University President Richard Levin, GRD '74, who has expressed an interest in reconstructing Yale's current facility.

Team members hope to build on this year's momentum. "The surge of talented freshmen and our new policy of instruction quality over riding time has given us high hopes for the future of the team," Catapano-Friedman said. "In just one year we've gone from a struggling squad in our regional competitions to a force with which to be reckoned."
