Branford

As the mercury continues to rise, and senior history majors finally begin to emerge after a winter-long hibernation, Branford IMs continue to pick up speed. Although some teams may still be struggling to put W's on the board, it certainly isn't for lack of participation or effort; the women of Branford-JE field hockey, including freshmen Tina Odiaka and Melissa Chung and juniors Jackie Chen and Martha Bagnall, have given their opponents quality competition all season, losing most recently in a 3-2 heartbreaker to Trumbrook. Likewise, coed billiards, with captain Mo Shamji '99, has been in close games all the season and looks to trample Trumbull this coming Tuesday. BFA has gotten strong play on the table from freshmen Erik Calloway and Anne Pawsat, Jen Lee '01, and juniors James Rhyu and Ashley Wisneski. With such a young squad, BFA should be a contender for years to come.

However, our spring has not just been about inspiring efforts from teams who play hard but don't win; high-flying coed Ultimate has used a deadly combination of depth, size, speed, and pure brute strength to steamroll its opponents so far, averaging more than 13 goals a game. The team remains in vigorous training for its next showdown with Stiles on Tues., Apr. 20. Coed soccer has also enjoyed record levels of participation, even in forfeit victories, as captains Randy Wolfe '01 and Meredith Trowbridge '99 have enticed upwards of 20 Branfordians to come out on a regular basis. And finally, coed volleyball has bounced back from a season-opening loss to Saybrook to regroup and beat JE and Morse in two close matches. Mad props go to sophomores Erin McGrath and Joci Simonson, Mark Lanpher '00, grass-stained Joe Doctor '02, and Vladdy Mukhin '04 for their roles in a great comeback win on Monday.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel, long-suffering Branfordians, and it is the top half of the Tyng standings. Keep up the good work, and you never know where we might just end up.

Branford has been having a great year so far and looks to continue the trend in the coming years with the emergence of a strong freshman class. The BFA is going to be a powerhouse for years to come, and we aren't done yet this year.
