Davenport

This year's strong crop of eager freshmen and veteran upperclassmen promises a breakthrough season for Davenport IMs. Captains Catherine "I don't just swing hard on the dance floor" Price '01 and Michael "my smile is only a façade" Kavanagh '00 will anchor the volleyball and ping pong teams. D-port also expects to pull itself from the depths of the Tyng standings with rejuvenation on the football, soccer, and tennis fields (or courts).

Volleyball is always a D-port favorite, and this year is no different, with huge support already being generated. Here in our Georgian courtyard, grass stains abound as the team prepares for a new season with the motto, "If Master T. can play, why can't we?"

Table tennis is equally well-manned, with a waiting list just to warm up the paddles. As soon as that darn storage area is cleared out, the poor residents of the upper courtyard will have a hard time sleeping through the round-the-clock practices.

Tennis has a strong crop of returning vets, with a dynamic doubles combo of sophomores ready to meet any challenge and wash away the bitter taste of last year's play-off elimination debacle.

Soccer, too, is out for vindication. After a roaring start last season, our attendance petered out. However, a strong lineup of motivational speakers should propel the team through winter break.

We'll admit that D-port football was in a sorry state last year. No such luck for the other teams in '99. The freshmen were quick to show their football wares at the opening days picnic, and the team won't look back.

Finally, Davenport has a secret weapon this year: a star athlete from the Residential Fellows and Their Relatives roster, Sarah Wennemyr. If you're from another college and you don't know Sarah, be afraid. Very afraid.
