Calhoun

I think...I ain't sure...But I think that John Caldwell Calhoun offered this nugget of wisdom to the Senate in 1847: "The surrender of life is nothing to sinking down into acknowledgement of inferiority." In the 1999-2000 intramural season, the denizens of 189 Elm St. have adopted this catchy phrase as their motto, which exhorts them as only the words of the seventh vice president of the United States can.

Not surprisingly, Calhoun's intramural athletes have found themselves driven to excel as never before. The golf team, already spurred by the J-Dawg's words, has tamed the Yale Course. Alex "There are 792 cards in a Topps complete" Setness '01, David "If I had" Wing"s I would fly...let me contemplate" '02, Eric "House of God" Casadei '01 and Sue "Tragically hip" Vanderhill '01 posted a stellar score while Lisa "Days of" Weinberger "and roses" `01, John "I can't find her" Hyman '01, and some scrub enjoyed a merry—but unofficial—jaunt around the links.

With the golf team setting the tone and an array of talented and strikingly handsome team captains to lead the team, the 'Houn is sure to head to the top. Alex "Thirty Game Winner" McClain '00 will make sure that the 1997 championship team's legacy lives on in coed football and will also pilot the women's soccer squad. Aubrey "All the people with whom I share my first name are old British men" Jennings '01 will handle table tennis and lead volleyball along with Adam "I'm a solid" Goldfarb "dancer" '02. The Farb will also take care of coed tennis with "My" Sharuna Nagwaney '00.

Cross country isn't really a sport per se, but we still have Tony "Carl" Lewis '00 "can run really fast and can jump really far" to take care of that formality. And that leaves the indomitable John Hyman, who did the most extensive research of his college career for this installment, determining that John C. Calhoun was indeed the seventh vice president of the United States.

(Compiled by a Calhoun IM Secretary who has skin like leather and the diamond-hard look of a cobra, was born blue and weathered but burst just like a supernova, could walk like Brando right into the sun, then dance just like a Casanova. In short, he finds that it's hard to be a saint in the city.)
