Stiles

New Haven (AP)—Ezra Stiles College sent an early message to its competitors in this summer's little-publicized IM competitions. Stiles took the bodysurfing championships in a close victory over teams from Silliman and Morse. "That last wave was, like, totally rad. I thought I was going down," captain Patrick Bumatay '00 described. "But at the last minute I got my balance and it was cool." Unfortunately, Stiles only pulled off second place in Beach Blanket Bingo. "I needed a B-7, but the caller said B-6. I was this close," Santi Duewel '00 said, holding her fingers only millimeters apart.

Mike Hargis '00 and Grant Chavin '01 pulled off a stunning upset in doubles tetherball, crushing the team from Timothy Dwight. "All you have to do is keep your eye on the ball and hit real hard," Chavin explained. Marc Bush '01, Alli O'Neill '00, Dave Barcelo '00 and Josh Kaplowitz '00 teamed up in dune buggy racing. "It was only a matter of time before the other teams' cars fell apart," said Kaplowitz with a wrench in his hand.

Going into the final two events, Stiles had already amassed a 37,432 point lead in the standings. Molly Fournier '01, Josh Frank '01, Eliza Park '01 and Geoff Suttle '01 padded that lead with an unsurprising victory in cliff-jumping. There was a slight scare when Suttle hit his head on the cliff. "It hurt," he later said. But he came through with a perfect dive only twenty minutes later, leading the team to victory.

In the final competition, Temi Mancusi-Ungaro '02 and Ximena Vidal '02 teamed up with Ken Lee '00 and Maegan Plagge '00 to defeat a tough Branford team in the staring contest. The game seemed lost when it appeared that Ken needed to sneeze, but he managed to hold out until a Branford player's contact lens dried out. "It hurt," Lee later said.

So Stiles comes into the fall season already far ahead in the standings and looking to improve. Captains Tad Yanagi '00 and Barcelo commented, "Why are we fall captains not mentioned in this report?"

IM games have actually been played.)
