Davenport

Someone get the firehose; there are some glowing embers in Davenport's IM fire, and we know the other colleges don't like to see that. After reaching our initial goal of solidifying 12th place, we have decided it's time to show what else we can do when we put our minds to it.

Ping-pong dominated on Tues., Sept. 28 with a convincing win over Branford (who didn't show up). In our intra-squad ping-pong match, the faux-Branfordians played true to their reputation, losing 2-5. The practice time obviously paid off, as Davenport continued its winning "gnop-gnip" (ask Kavanagh, not us) ways on Thurs., Sept. 30, proving again that wider is better.

And then there's soccer. Fri., Sept. 24, was a return to the glory days when long hair flowed and D-port upperclassmen came out for IMs. Not surprisingly, our opponents were helpless. The freshmen were duly inspired by this show of D-port dominance, as they came out running on all cylinders against Stiles. Despite being undermanned, the team of eight frosh and two upperclassmen stormed to a 4-0 lead. The MVPs of the game were hat-trick-scoring Dave "They teach us football right in England" Auerbach '03 and Peter "I've never played keeper" Shattuck '03. Sure, Peter. I bet you "never study" either.

Football? Well, who could expect us to do well when we had just finished trouncing Stiles in soccer? Especially when the Stilesians' combined body weight was exactly 2.8 times ours and all muscle. At least we played with heart. (Maybe if we had some upperclassmen things might have gone differently.)

And volleyball made the quarterfinals. Who would have thought? What does this all add up to? Well, we may not be vying for first just yet, but the thought of 10th place is sure making our salivary glands work overtime.
