Fall Recap

After eight grueling weeks, IM action is finally heading inside to the House of Payne. It's time for the Sage to take aim at the Tyng picture before IMs move to warmer ground.

At the top, the Morsels justified their preseason No. 1 prediction with an impressive season. Fall is all about the big-point sports, and Morse's run was anchored by a perfect men's soccer squad and near-flawless ping- pong and tennis teams. Saybrook proved it's still for real, dominating touch football and also posting big seaons in the racket sports. Stiles' consistent sweeps and splits, especially against top-six opponents, earned them third. TD and Calhoun continued to run the fall fields with both talent and numbers, and Silliman built on newfound stability in its historically weakest season.

And at the bottom, Branford never recovered from the golf mishap, and Berkeley must find women if it seeks to halt a gigantic fall from prominence. Davenport could well be the story of the year, finishing in an unheard of eighth place. Meanwhile Pierson, Trumbull, and JE just couldn't find any squads to carry them.

Now, for the Best and Worst of the Last Fall Season of the Millennium.

Biggest college surprise: Stiles. A Stilesian forfeit is almost unheard of, and the Moose may reclaim the glory it once enjoyed in the early '90s.

Biggest college disappointment: Berkeley. A lack of Berkeley females killed perennial point gainers in women's soccer, coed touch, and coed ping-pong, which went from first to worst in one year.

Most dominant team: Morse men's soccer. Fall's only 11-0 team, the Morsels prevailed even against the league's best.

Most improved team: Silliman ping-pong. The squad left behind a sordid history of 28 losses in three straight losing seasons to tie for third this year and—and it will graduate no one from its ladder.

(Compiled by the only man crazy enough to play eight weeks of IMs with an ulcer.)
