Where'd the mail go?

On the night of Wed., Nov. 17, students were without email, either by telnet or POP, for several hours. In fact, logging into Pantheon took several minutes, after which error messages indicated that connection to the IMAP server for mail was failing. A look at the AM&T network status page showed clear problems with the post office servers. This was just the latest in a series of failures of the mail servers.

Shawn Bayern, SM '99, Senior Programmer for Technology and Planning at ITS, said that he was looking into the problem. "The post-office machines have been experiencing performance problems," he said. "ITS has purchased new hardware in response to the problem and is waiting for it to be delivered to install it. I'm personally going to start dealing with the problem myself soon, trying to understand exactly what the performance problem IS, where it comes from, and what we can do in the long term to make sure that the machines are reasonably responsive."
