Winter Preview

The top spot looks too close to call, with both Morse and Saybrook looking to match their banner winters last year. Morse will do its best to defend its hockey and B-hoops titles, while Saybrook will be gunning again for C-hoops, women's volleyball, and women's hoops championships. Stiles, meanwhile, will fight to stay competitive, also leaning on strong v-ball, women's hoops, and C-hoops teams. Silliman has improved winter after winter the past three years, and could creep back into the race if no one watches. TD and Calhoun, meanwhile, have to forget the past—the Ashirs from Temple Street have finished 11th and ninth the past two winters, and the 'Hounies took a Tyng race-ending 10th in 1998-99. In the bottom half, look for Branford, Pierson, and JE to gain ground. D-port hockey and BK women's squash, however, may end up being one-trick ponies, and the 'Bull needs to find some red. Matchups to watch:

A-hoops: PC footballers Ben Blake '00, Eli Kelley '00, and Jeff Hockenbrock '00 will square off against Eric Johnson '01, Jake Borden '00, and the Spiders.

B-hoops: Warner Off '02, Alex Stegall '02, and the Morsels look to threepeat.

C-hoops: Saybrook stalwarts Dave Platt-ner '01 and Matt Chang '01 hope their fellow strippers have enough for 11 games.

Women's hoops: Natasha Bloom, SY '00, and Christine Anthony, SM '01, anchor well-balanced squads. Also watch for Morse's Sara Perkins '01, who could singlehandedly take on entire women's teams.

Men's volleyball: Piersonites Tom Lo '00 and Matt Janik '00 will try to hold off a tough Silliman squad that includes four-year vets Ernest Morris '00, Chris Lee '00, and Shane Dizon '00, who are hungry for their first shirts. But Temy Mancusi-Ungaro '02, Andy Beck '02, Patrick Bumatay'00, and the Stilesians are hoping to steal one here.

Women's volleyball: Teri Hickey '00 may lead the 'Brook to another title, but not if Ximena Vidal '00, Santi Duewel '00, and their Moose posse have their way.

Coed water polo: Defending champ TD returns lots of seniors—Kevin Schelenski, Merrill Dobson, Ben Langworthy, Gates Hurand, and Lily Morgan. But Rebecca Goodman '00 and the BFA Swingers could hit the showers with the gold in 2000.

Men's squash: It's the juniors—Colin Pan, Mike Hoevel, and Trygve Bakken—who will turn Morse's second-place finish in '99 up a notch in 2000.

Women's squash: Berkeley has dared anyone to beat them. Will Deb Bauer '01, Eranthi Weerapana '00, and the rest of the Lipstick lovers step up to the challenge?

Coed swimming: Andrew Whealy '02 and his friends in Morse are determined to get back that one point that separated them from a perfect run in '99. But Nicole Castonguay '00, Chris Baranano '00, and Chris Crowe '00 are determined to lead a Silliman repeat.

Coed Ice hockey: Perennial powerhouses Morse, Saybrook, Pierson, Davenport, and Silliman could be surprised by up-and-comers Trumbull, Branford, and JE.

Coed bowling: Saybrook's Bloom '00 and Pierson's Keith Wesolowski '00 will try to make their teams kingpins, while Berkeley fellow Tom Falco will contend again for top individual honors.
