Calhoun

After last year's sorrowful attendance rate, table tennis captains Aubrey Jenn-ings '01 and Adam Goldfarb '02 were pessimistic going into the 2000 season. "I am really pessimistic going into the 2000 season," Ms. Jennings said. But little did they know that down in the windowless, airless, lightless squash courts of Calhoun College, an underground table tennis association was thriving throughout the spring of 2000. Occasionally residents of the college could hear screams of agony coming from the basement, but when they tried to go downstairs to find out what was going on, they could not get past the locked door marked "Squash Courts." It is now known that the sounds were the voices of the table tennis team, who reserved the courts under the alias of the Sledge Biotechnology Society (SBS). The leader of this rough and tumble gang, Tom Ni '03, refused to go into specifics. "Let's just say there was some ping-pong being played down there, some serious ping-pong." If the rumors are true, Mr. Ni and his assistants, Amman Fenster '03 and Josh Lobert '03 were running a sort of military style training camp, complete with 5 a.m. runs and surprise midnight drills. One player, who wishes to remain anonymous, but is called Alice Ricks '01, attributes her stinging backhand to these midnight practices. "Tom and Amman were really tough on us during those late sessions. But now that the season is here, I think we all know it was worth it." Whether the training regimen of SBS will bring home a championship remains to be seen.
