Saybrook

Every once in a while a team comes along that is heralded as "the greatest ever." The '98 Yankees, with their 114 regular season wins, or the '95-'96 Chicago Bulls, with their 72-10 record, received such accolades. For two awesome games, the Saybrook men's and women's soccer teams played with such skill and perfection that it appeared that the "greatest ever" men's and women's soccer teams were putting on a clinic. On the women's side, Saybrook played an awesome game last week, crushing then-first-place opponent Berkeley-Calhoun. The game started slowly, but by the second half Saybrook took a commanding lead, scoring multiple goals in mere minutes. The mad goal-keeping skills of Phoebe "The Terminator" Heffron '04 kept the Berkeley-Calhoun score to a minimum, as did the formidable defense of Jennifer "JJ" Jimenez '04. Also huge was the awe-inspiring play of Alice "I'm defense, I'm offense, I'm going to score so get the %$#^ out of my way" Liu '01, who was unstoppable. Impressive? Oh yes.

And then there were the Saybrook men. Oh yes, were they magnificent. In a performance that would have pleased the Greek gods themselves, Saybrook bent Calhoun over its knee and gave it a whuppin'. Forwards Tommy "Swift as Hermes" Hobson '04 and Matt "Hat Trick" Fitzgerald '04 toyed with the Calhoun defense, while our D, anchored by Miles "Stylianos, I'm hungry and thirsty" Haladay '02 and Dylan "The Titan" Fuge '01, shut Calhoun down. Also playing divinely were goalkeeper Dan "Strong as Zeus" Kelley '03, Powell "Ares, god of war" Jose '01, Josh "Feel the wrath of Hades" Zaharoff '02, and Askar "Achilles the warrior" Tashtitov '02. Saybrook played with such skill that Calhoun madman Stylianos Fragos '01 later commented, "I am in awe of Saybrook men's soccer. When I watch them play, I wet myself because I get so excited. Wow." We couldn't have said it any better ourselves. (Compiled by some people who, for one brilliant game, were members of the Greatest IM Soccer Team Ever Assembled.)
