Quaker going pro

Penn's Michael Jordan signs with the Celtics

Penn graduate Michael Jordan '00 signed a free agent contract with the Boston Celtics over the weekend. Last year's unanimous Ivy League Player of the Year, Jordan led the Quakers to their second straight Ivy League title with a perfect 14-0 League record. The Philadelphia native is third in career scoring at Pennsylvania with 1,604 points, second in assists (469) and third in steals (147). Jordan, who went undrafted, played for his home city in the Shaw's Pro Summer League, which is run by the Celtics.

The Quakers are looking to three-peat in 2000-01 after winning the Ivy title last season and heading to the NCAA Tournament for the 18th time in Penn history. Ugonna Onyekwe, '02, last year's Ivy League Rookie of the Year, returns alongside 2000-01 captain Geoff Owens '01, who finished the 1999-2000 campaign with 54 blocks. Eight returning letter winners and three incoming freshmen contend for starting roles.
