Weekend Excursion

Interested in figurative painting? Take a trip to Old Lyme, Conn. to see a landmark exhibition of figurative painting, on view from Nov. 5 through Dec. 7. The exhibition, titled "Ten Figurative Painters in New England: An Artist's Choice," is jointly organized by the Shoreline Alliance for the Arts and the Lyme Art Association, both of which promote artistic activity. William Bailey, Professor Emeritus of Painting at Yale, is the curator of the exhibit. An internationally-renowned realist artist, Bailey has works in the permanent collections of 42 museums, university collections, and corporations, including MOMA, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hirshhorn Museum, and many others. For "Ten Figurative Painters in New England," Bailey has chosen ten New England artists to feature in the exhibition: Gideon Bok, Nancy Flanagan, David Gloman, Susan Lichtman, Langdon Quin, Richard Raiselis, Katy Schneider, Steven Sheehan, Gwen Strahle, and Grier Torrence. In addition to being highly distinguished figurative painters, these 10 artists are all Yale alumni. "Ten Figurative Painters..." will be on display at the historic Lyme Art Association galleries in Old Lyme. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 12 to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. A Gala Preview Party is scheduled for Sat. evening, Nov. 4, featuring tours of the exhibit, appearances by the artists, cocktails and light fare. But since the $75 per person or $125 per couple price tag is a bit prohibitive, check out the exhibit gratis after it opens to the public the next afternoon.
