Weekend Excursion

MARISA BASS/YH
Stuck in New Haven over Thanksgiving break? Mired in guilt over work that you're hoping will miraculously do itself? Holed up in your dorm room bemoaning the absence of all of your friends? Get into the holiday spirit and reest-ablish human contact at New Haven's annual Tree Lighting celebration on Sat., Nov. 25. Held on the New Haven Green, the festivities will include great music, holiday cheer, and the lighting of the giant tree. The tree lighting ceremony is presented by the City of New Haven Office of Cultural Affairs and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Trees, and sponsored by the Wave Gallery, in addition to media sponsors WELI Newstalk 960 AM, and WKCI 101.3 FM. City residents and Yale students can gather on the green at 6 p.m. to kick off the Christmas season. And, in the spirit of community, everyone in attendance is asked to bring a children's book to donate to the New Haven Reads Book Bank. Following the ceremony, walk over to the United Church on the Green, located at 270 Temple St., for some holiday music. The church will hold "The Colonial Concert XXI" at 8 p.m., with tickets available for $15-29. So if you're still in the area or back from your hometown Turkey Day festivities that Saturday evening, get involved in New Haven life beyond the gates of Yale and join in the start of the citywide Christmas countdown.
