Jonathan Edwards

Like Backstreet, JE hoops is back, all right. In the first week of action, our cagers are 3-1, having come back in nail-biting fashion for all three victories. The women went first, overpowering 'da Houn with man-to-man (if you will) defense and a silver tongue and stormed back to take the game, 29-28. Among those showing their abolitionist spirit were Miriam "Kelly Levin '02" Siefter '03, Candace "It's not easy being" Greene '02, Lisa "Muggsy Bogues" Marshall '02, Clarissa "Ward '02" Clarke '03, Karlyn "Sonja '98" Martin '04, Jessica "Dan '98" Price '04, and Captain Lauren "Cream's Irish" Baillie '02. The next night, it was the men's turn. The B- hoopsters put the finishing touches on a comeback from a 10-0 deficit. Javier Rivera '02, a minute after getting in the face of a D-porter who tried to steal away a ball—like Dubya '68 trying to steal candy from Vlad the Impaler—sunk the winning bucket with 15 seconds left. Meanwhile, the A-Team came back from the military prison of a two-point deficit with 25 seconds left when Aaron Lichtig '02 sunk two free throws to force overtime. The next day, after clinching a 43-38 overtime victory with three key layups from 'Tig and Brenden McEnea-ney '02, they survived as soldiers of fortune with a 1-0 record. Volleyball isn't hoops, but we're good at it anyway. Despite losing four starters from last season's championship team, like Michigan State, the men didn't rebuild—they reload, and then they shoot their load, like Henry Clay, all over Calhoun, 15-5, 15-7. As good as we are now, like Backstreet, we'll only get better. Because a certain record-holding receiver is nursing his thumb, getting ready for the hoops season. This same basketball star captained his high-school volleyball team, and was named by the Boston Globe as one of the top six players in Massachusetts. His name is Eric Johnson '01. Like ghosts when the Ghostbusters come after them, be afraid. Be very afraid. (Compiled by an avid EJ fan.)
