Weekend Excursion

SARAH ENGLAND/YH
Although her most well-known work dates from the '70s, Adrian Piper's art delivers messages that ring true in the new millenium. A woman of mixed heritage, Piper unflinchingly challenges gender and race stereotypes with aggressive conceptual art. Her pieces range from static works to performance pieces and films. Among the more avant-garde of Piper's works is "Mythic Being," a 1973 performance in which Piper dressed as a young black man and walked the streets of NYC staging muggings and groping women.

A small retrospective of Piper's work is currently on display at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, 538 Broadway, New York. The exhibit contains works that span Piper's career, illustrating her adoption of increasingly violent forms of artistic protest as she struggled to find her own identity as a half-black, half-white woman caught in a racial limbo. The retrospective runs through January 21, 2001. Museum hours are Wednesday, 12 to 6 p.m., Thursday and Saturday, 12 to 8 p.m., and Sunday, 12 to 6 p.m. Admission is $3 for students.

So if you have some time during reading week, take a break from studying and head into the city for a day of art and relaxation (and maybe a little holiday shopping).

—Holly Kline
