Gymnastics: Hopes for healthy season

The University of Rhode Island (URI) will be a challenging season opener for the Bulldogs, despite last year's record-breaking season, in which Shoshanna Engel, DC '03, broke school records on both the floor and on the balance beam, and Andrea Wolf, JE '03, broke the Yale record on the vault and finished in 10th place at the NCAA Region 5 Championships.

Yale has the potential to start out strong. "Everyone is back and healthy and working hard," Sumitra Paul, SY '02, said. "We are definitely starting the season off on the right foot." The coaching staff and the team expect a tough match-up for the event: URI is a scholarship school and able to recruit top- level gymnasts.

The returning team members will gain new strength from five talented freshmen who are preparing for their debut at Yale this weekend. And this will be the first season in Captain Lisa Crowley's, ES '01, memory during which there will be extra, uninjured members in the lineup.

Crowley emphasized that the Ivy League banner is always a goal for the Bulldogs. This year Yale is hosting the championship meet, and Crowley hopes that the home-court advantage will help Yale reclaim the banner it last won in 1996.

In the season opener against URI this weekend, Paul has realistic expectations and hopes the Elis will step onto the mats ready to "hit six for six routines and to do what we can at this point, our first meet." —Miriam Fishman
