Track and field works toward indoor league championship

BY LINDSEY STIMPSON

Following their successful first meet, the men's and women's track and field teams have high expectations going into this winter's indoor season. "We were coming off of a break, finals, and a hard week of practice," Head Coach Mark Young, ES '68, said. "The meet is a measuring stick for the rest of the season." Overall, the meet was a success. Women in the long and triple jumps and the male runners performed particularly well.

The remainder of the indoor season includes meets against traditional Ivy rivals, the highly anticipated meet against Harvard and Princeton, and the Heptagonal Championships in February, where the league champion will be determined.

Young anticipates that upperclass leadership will guide the teams through league competition and into Heptagonals. On the women's squad, Yetsa Tuakli-Wosornu, TD '01, Jennifer Newsom, JE '01, Emily Estey, BR '01, and Melanie Harris, BK '01, have emerged as leaders and tough competitors. Young said that Tuakli-Wosornu and Newsom stood "at the top of the league," and added that Harris and Estey provide strength in the middle-distance races. The men are led by long distance runner Rob Doyle, DC '01, and Captain Jason Rife, SM '01. "Rob is very, very good, and Jason provides good leadership," Young commented.

In short, the team's expectatons are running high. "We need to keep everyone fit, healthy, and focused from week to week, and then we should be a very strong threat for the championship," Young said. McKay also commented, "This is the most talented team I have ever been on. If we want to win a championship, this is the year to do it." —Lindsey Stimpson
