Weekend Excursion

Now that the Harvard students are out of town, there's no better time to travel to the Boston area. Emerson Majestic Theatre's Flamenco Festival 2001 presents the perfect weekend diversion. The Festival promises to provide a combination of innovation and tradition. Spain's María Pagés will perform a fully choreographed flamenco narrative with her company of nine dancers, while compatriot Farruquito and his famous gypsy family will demonstrate the tradition of flamenco puro.

Pagés will be making the Boston debut of her newest piece, La Tirana, the story of a museum visitor who falls in love with a Goya painting and remains in the museum after it closes to dance with Goya's muse. La Tirana, which premiered at the Teatro de la Maestranza de Seville in 1998, has been hailed as a milestone in contemporary flamenco, and Pagés has been bestowed with the most prestigious dance award in Spain, the National Award of Choreography.

Farruquito, on the other hand, is renowned as one of the most faithful representatives of traditional flamenco. Only 17 years old, he is accompanied by his family. The gypsy group is famed for their dancing, which ranges from fondango to bulería through the seguiriya, guajira, and tangos.

Flamenco Festival 2001, which began on Thurs., Jan. 25 and will continue throughout the weekend, blends the old and the new in the Emerson Majestic Theatre's intimate 850-seat performance space. La Tirana will play on Sat., Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. and Farruquito y Familia on Fri., Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. and Sun., Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $40, $35, and $30 and are available at the Emerson Majestic Theatre box office. —Diana M.
