Weekend Excursion

New York's New International Center of Photography Museum is the third and last location of Andy Warhol: Photography, an exhibit that premiered in Hamburg, Germany in 1999. Accessible now to Yalies escaping to the city for the weekend, more than 300 works will be on view at the ICP Museum now through March.

The exhibit focuses on the photographs of Warhol, one of the pioneers of the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, used as source material for his paintings. Warhol was an avid photographer almost to the point of obsessiveness; he toted his camera everywhere, making between 60,000 and 100,000 snapshots and Polaroids in his lifetime. Yet the display is not restricted to Warhol's photographs. It seeks rather to juxtapose these works with his work in other media, including over 20 paintings, prints, and continuous video projections of the early Warhol films "Sleep" and "Kiss." The contents of one of Warhol's early Time Capsules are also on display, along with a 400-page catalogue, "Andy Warhol Photography," which features color and duotone illustrations and eight historical and interpretive essays.

Andy Warhol: Photography will prove equally fascinating for fans of Warhol and the Pop Art movement, as well as those who know nothing of Warhol beyond the ubiquitous Campbell's soup can and silkscreen Marilyn Monroe. It provides the opportunity to view Warhol's mixture of photography, mass media, and fine art in one location, showcasing the play of identity and performance in the artist's portraits. For students curious about how one artist reacted to the usurpation of hand-drawn illustration by the camera, the exhibit is not to be missed. —Diana M. Aleman
