Yale continues unbeaten record with dominating wins

BY SAMUEL WEBB

The women's swim team turned in one of its top performances this past weekend with strong wins over Dartmouth and Penn. The two Ivy League victories contributed to Yale's impressive undefteated record, now 9-0 (4-0 Ivy).

However, these victories were not guaranteed prior to the meet, Shannon Dunlap, BR'01, noted, "The coaches talked about how close the meet was going to be, especially against Penn, but we came together and won."

Yale not only won, but dominated both Dartmouth, 191-88, and Penn, 158-131. Assistant Coach Tim Wise stressed the team's intensity: "They did a nice job of maintaining their focus. We were swimming by ourselves but still managed to turn in season best times."

Yale swimmers won an impressive 11 out of 16 total events, with five swimmers breaking personal records en route to victory. Heidi Kraus, SM '03, won the 1,000-yard freestyle, and sprinter Meredith Bryarly, BR '01, won the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. Susan Cooke, BK '03, took the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes, and Kim Richardson, ES '03, took the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes. Emily Fain, DC '02, set a personal record of 1:54.17 in her 200-yard freestyle victory. Rebecca Fausel, JE '04, got in on the act as well, winning the 200-yard fly. Yale's dominance extended to the boards, with Dunlap taking both the one-meter and three-meter dives.

The victories gave the team confidence for this weekend's meet against Harvard and defending Ivy champion Princeton. Fain put the team's remarkable undefeated record into perspective: "Two years ago, we weren't expected to do much at H-Y-P, but now we are undefeated and have a good chance of beating both Harvard and Princeton," she said. —Samuel Webb
