Bulldogs in the spotlight

BY RACHEL LUBERDA

The men's track team competed in three separate meets last weekend, looking to improve in individual events while facing talented opposition and running on faster indoor tracks.

Most of Yale's long-distance runners competed in the Terrier Classic held at Boston University, where Peter Furia, PC '04, finished first in the unseeded 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:40.34. The short- and middle-distance runners, along with some field eventers, went to the Husky Invitational at Northeastern University. Rob Reiter, SM '01, grabbed a fourth place finish in the 1,000-yard run, and the 4x400-yard relay team earned a fifth-place finish. Anthony Thomas, DC '03, finished fourth in the long jump, and Eoghan O'Dwyer, TC '04, achieved a fifth place finish in the shot put.

Despite a small representation, the Bulldogs earned a place in the spotlight at the Penn State National Open. Not only did Robert Doyle, DC '01, finish second overall in the 5,000-meter, but he also broke an 18-year-old school record with a time of 14:13.95. Donald Carson, CC '02, raced to eighth place in the 800-meter, while Thomas Hocker, PC '02, placed seventh in the 500-meter dash. Carson notes that it is the quality of athletes that distinguishes this team. "We're gunning to be the best team in the Ivy League. Our focus is not just to do well in the Ivies anymore. Our focus is to win," he said. And that's just what Yale hopes to do heading into this weekend's home meets with Army and Cornell. —Rachel Luberda
