Brown soccer seniors chosen for Major League Soccer teams

On Mon., Feb. 5, three Brown seniors were among 72 players chosen in the annual Major League Soccer draft. The accomplishments of Cory Gibbs, Scott Powers, and Matthew Cross certainly reflect their selection. Gibbs was the Ivy League Player of the Year last fall and ended the season tied for the team lead in scoring. He was drafted by his hometown team, the Miami Fusion. Powers, who was awarded both First Team All-Ivy and First Team New England honors, was drafted by the Kansas City Wizards. Powers led his team in scoring with six goals and eight assists, including a game-winner over Duke in the NCAA tournament. Cross was one of the most skilled goalies in the Ivy League, with a career record of 24 shutouts in 60 games. He was First Team All-Ivy for a second time this year, allowing only 67 goals and making 263 saves in 5,600 minutes of action. Cross was also picked by the Kansas City Wizards.
